The platform
The adaptive digital twin
Modica is building an adaptive digital twin for bioprocesses: a live model that simulates and predicts critical parameters, compares every batch to its golden envelope, and recommends corrective action. It runs on clean, standardized, live data from any plant.
Why bioprocesses are hard to run
A bioreactor is a living system. The same recipe can give different results batch to batch, and a process proven at bench scale often behaves differently in production. Instruments report physical conditions in real time, but the things that decide success — cell density, metabolic state, product quality — are measured late, offline, or not at all.
The result is a gap between monitoring and understanding. Teams can see what a process is doing without knowing where it is heading — and by the time an offline assay confirms a problem, the batch that caused it is often already finished.
What an adaptive digital twin is
A digital twin is a live computational model of a real process, kept in step with it by incoming data — and able to simulate the consequences of a change before you make it on the tank. It turns monitoring into decision support: not only what happened, but what is about to, and what to do about it.
“Adaptive” matters. A useful twin does not stay frozen at the conditions it was built for; it updates as batches run and carries what it learns across scales and campaigns, so it stays faithful as the process and the biology move.
How it fits together
Connectivity
A universal layer that turns fragmented plant signals into a clean, standardized model — the foundation everything else depends on.
Model
Hybrid mechanistic and machine-learning models, with soft sensors that estimate what instruments cannot measure directly.
Decision
Golden-envelope monitoring, forecasting with confidence, and prescriptive recommendations that help steer a batch, not just watch it.
Simulation & Prediction
Critical-parameter forecasts, the golden envelope, deviation detection and recommendations.
ExploreConnectivity
Universal connectivity (OPC UA, Modbus, S7, MQTT, MTP) that feeds the twin standardized data.
